Type 4 Stereotyping: The FIA System (Part II)
I found a description of the FIA system on LongHairDontCare.net. It’s based on 3 classifiers:
- Your curliness
- What (most of) your individual strands look like
- Your overall volume of hair
2 issues I have with the FIA system:
- There are only 2 subcategories for FIA’s type 4 (“The really curly ones”): 4a – tightly coiled S-curls & 4b – tightly coiled hair bending in sharp angles (Z-pattern)
- Coarse hair’s description has no room for me: Under what your strands look like, coarse hair (the final category) is described as “thick strands that where shed strands usually are easily identified against most backgrounds. Similar to hair found on many people of Asian or native American descent.” Hmm, my hair can definitely not be described as being similar to Asian or native American hair.
The FIA system doesn’t really work for me, as it’s too similar to the Walker system.
For me, there’s a better hair typing system out there: the LOIS system.
